What can you as an instructor do to keep students engaged, even in large lecture hall settings? The challenge is to make a big class feel small. This requires having students envision the classroom as a community to which they belong and not merely a class in which they are enrolled. Both Professors Olsen and Campbell have learned from experience how to sustain students' attention without sacrificing substance. In this panel, they will discuss practical tips and techniques to foster a sense of classroom community and encourage students' participation--from interactive activities to in-class polling. The discussion will be applicable to all disciplines--from STEM to the Humanities, and everything in between.

    Facilitators:

    • David Campbell, Professor of American Democracy at the University of Notre Dame and the director of the Notre Dame Democracy Initiative.
    • Mitchell Olsen, Associate Teaching Professor of Marketing; Assistant Department Chair and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Marketing Department
