This workshop is an introduction to medieval diplomatics (the study of documents) with a specific focus on medieval English diplomatics—a field often left out of diplomatics handbooks and courses.
Featuring the Hesburgh Library's own collection of English private charters, attendees will learn, with hands-on experience, how to identify and quickly read different types of private medieval documents. Attendees will also be introduced to the wide variety of resources available for the study of diplomatics. This workshop is ideal for any who wish to work with medieval documents, historical biography, or English history. Prior experience with Latin, western paleography, and manuscripts is preferred but not required.
